Teething can be a tough stage for both puppies and their owners.
As their new teeth push through, young dogs often experience sore gums, making them eager to chew on just about anything.
Without the right chew options, your shoes, furniture, and fingers might become their targets.
Choosing safe chewing items, or iced items, can ease their discomfort and protect your home at the same time.
What Happens During Teething?
Puppies start to lose their baby teeth at around 3 to 4 months of age.
This process continues for about 6 months. During this time, their gums may swell and feel sore.
Chewing helps relieve this pressure, much like a baby chewing on a teething ring.
Because their urge to chew is strong, having the right things for them to chew on is key.
If they don’t have suitable chew items, they’ll find their own, and that often includes your belongings.
The Best Types of Teething Toys/Chews
There are many types of items to help puppies through this stage. Here are some of the most useful.
We, however, recommend edible teething chews above all.
These are not only nutritious and filling, but they will also encourage them to chew as they will lose interest in toys.
1. Soft Rubber Toys
Gentle on their sore gums but firm enough to chew, these items give puppies something to sink their teeth into without hurting themselves.
Look for toys made from safe, non-toxic rubber.
2. Freezable Toys
Toys that can be chilled in the freezer bring extra relief. The cold helps numb sore gums, making chewing more soothing.
Many freezable items have ridges or bumps that massage the gums while your puppy chews.
3. Rope Toys (Freeze)
Tightly woven rope toys are great for teething and can help clean teeth at the same time.
Make sure to pick ones made for young dogs, as adult versions can be too tough.
We recommend dipping the rope toy in water and freezing it to provide numbness to the gums.
4. Edible Teething Chews (Most recommended)
Some treats are made for teething puppies.
These are soft enough to chew safely but firm enough to help with gum relief.
Always supervise your pup when giving edible chews, and avoid anything that breaks into sharp pieces.
Best for chewing, we recommend raw frozen bones, frozen carrots, frozen apples, bully sticks, stuffed kongs or toppls, tracheas, and dried heels.
This, as mentioned, will encourage them to chew; it is nutritious and filling, whereas they will get bored with toys.

Helpful Habits to Avoid Chewing Trouble
A few good habits can go a long way in stopping damage to your furniture and clothes.- Keep valuables out of reach. Puppies explore with their mouths. Move shoes, bags, and electrical cords where they can’t get to them.
- Offer chew treats often. Keep a treat nearby wherever your puppy spends time. This gives them better choices than your furniture.
- Redirect gently. If they start chewing something they shouldn’t, calmly take it away and offer a chew treat instead.
- Stay patient. Teething doesn’t last forever. With time, guidance, and the right chew options, puppies learn what’s okay to chew.
