DO arrive early for class. This ensures that you and your pup settle down nicely before class. Take that extra 15 minutes to take a walk around and bring your pup’s excitement levels down before the work begins.
DON’T be late for class. This disrupts all the other pups and wastes loads of time.
DO make sure that you have a secret stash of extra special treats or your pup’s favourite toy. Bring this out in the last 10 minutes of class to boost your dog’s motivation for the final stretch.
DO keep your dog focused on you during class time. A wandering pup, or a pup who enjoys trying to play with his classmates can be very disruptive. Use every opportunity possible to teach your pooch that you are worth focusing on even in the face of friendly distractions
DON’T switch off while your trainer is helping another handler. You can learn a lot from other’s mistakes and challenges. Listen in on the guidance the trainer is giving, it may be helpful in the future.
DO try to implement the training advice given to you for at least two weeks. We are quick to make excuses as to why certain plans and techniques won’t work, before even attempting it. Your trainer/behaviorist has been at this a long time though, and you pay good money for their knowledge and expertise. Give their advice a good go for two weeks, with 100% effort. Then if it doesn’t work, ask for an alternative plan.
DO practice, practice, practice. Training happens at home, on walks, on outings. Class time is for YOU to learn a few things. The real training is up to you. Put in just a few minutes every day. You’ll see the difference in your pooch
DON’T forget to have FUN! Our dogs are with us for too short a time. Embrace the bond that is created through positive training. And enjoy every milestone
